Apple Watch Series 12 Expected to Focus on Health Features Rather Than a Major Redesign

The Apple Watch Series 12 is expected to arrive with a stronger focus on health tracking rather than a dramatic hardware redesign when Apple unveils its latest smartwatch lineup on Sept. 9.

Reports ahead of the launch point to incremental hardware changes, including potentially improved heart-rate sensing, a new processor and as much as 128GB of storage. The biggest changes, however, may come through watchOS 27 and new health and workout features.

Health Tracking Could Be the Biggest Change

Code discovered in watchOS 27 points to a new “Readiness” health app that could become one of the most visible additions to the Apple Watch experience. The app has not appeared in the current beta, and its exact functionality has not been confirmed, but references suggest a connection to the Workout app.

The software also indicates changes to strength workouts. Users may be able to record more detailed information, including multiple sets, repetitions, exercise duration and equipment used.

Another potential upgrade involves heart-rate monitoring. The current Apple Watch takes continuous readings during exercise and for a period after a workout, while measurements during the rest of the day occur at intervals. The new approach could move toward more continuous monitoring throughout the day, providing additional data that could be used for readiness and heart-rate variability tracking.

Apple Watch Series 12 Could Double Storage

Storage may also receive a significant upgrade. The Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 are expected to potentially offer 128GB of storage, double the 64GB capacity found in the current models.

The additional space could allow users to keep more music and offline maps on their watches. It is not yet clear whether Apple has another major use for the extra storage in this generation.

New Chip Expected for the Series 12

The Apple Watch Series 12 is also expected to receive a new chipset after the Series 11 retained the previous generation’s S10 processor.

A newer chip could improve processing performance or efficiency, potentially helping the watch handle more demanding health features while managing power consumption. More capable neural processing could also provide a foundation for future on-device AI functions, although that is not confirmed as a Series 12 feature.

Ultra 4 May Get a Brighter Display

Apple’s premium smartwatch is also expected to receive an update. Reports indicate the Apple Watch Ultra 4 could feature a brighter display than the Ultra 3, which has a peak brightness of 3,000 nits.

The change would come with tradeoffs because higher brightness can increase power consumption and heat. The Ultra 4 is expected to launch alongside the Apple Watch Series 12.

While the Apple Watch Series 12 may not deliver a sweeping redesign, the combination of improved health monitoring, additional storage, a new chipset and watchOS 27 features could make the 2026 generation a meaningful update for users focused on fitness and health tracking.
